What is/are bangs in a woman's hairstyle?

This old fart who lives only for my dogs keeps hearing this (american?) term. Can somebody help? What is/are bangs in a woman's hairstyle?
What we brits call a fringe!What is/are bangs in a woman's hairstyle?
It's a fringe that, classically falls directly in front of ones face, upon their forehead.

Other styles of bangs include side-swept bangs, and parted bangs.
